Copper Roofs

Copper roofs are just now becoming popular in the Pacific Northwest. This unique metal does not require a protective finish and, once exposed to the weather, it quickly loses its shiny surface and turns a rich, earth-tone brown. Over a period of years, it develops a blue-green color, referred to as patina, resulting from the formation of a protective copper oxide. The amount of time required to achieve this coveted patina depends on a variety of factors including the slope of the roof, weather, and contaminants in the air.

Once new copper is installed, the shiny red finish will change over a period of seven to ten years. Within the first two to four months, the red gives way to a dull, dark brown. In approximately three years, a green patina will become noticeable and at seven to ten years, this patina will be the predominant, familiar color of the metal. Another option is to apply chemical solutions, which can be applied to produce an immediate patina. Each project's circumstances will dictate which coloring technique is most desirable, if one is needed at all.

Copper is one of the more malleable metals and is available in various tempers or ranges of hardness. Water run-off from oxidized copper can visibly stain light-colored porous building materials such as concrete, brick, and limestone. In such cases, lead-coated copper might be used; however, lead run-off can stain dark colored building materials. We are happy to discuss the various options for using copper on your building.
